Kevin Zepper's Poetry Reading at SMSU

I admire Kevin Zepper's poetry on many levels--the craft, the lively music, the word play, and the delightful range, as Mark Vinz writes, "from whimsy to tender sensuousness, always full of surprises, full of love for language, full of love."

I hope you enjoy watching this YouTube video of Kevin's reading as much as I enjoyed a front-row seat in Charter Hall 201 this past Monday night at Southwest Minnesota State University.

Some of my favorite Zepper poems from this reading are "Botany," "Rose Girl," "Sugartown," "Beef Pot Pies" (I loved them as a kid), "Big Mother Boots," and "Java Dive."

Kevin's four chapbooks are Sugartown, I Bring You Dead Things, The Fifth Ramone: Prose Poems and (Suffering from) An Apartment Complex.

Join us at the Southwest Minnesota State University Visiting Writers Series on Monday, March 24 for a poetry reading by Kevin Zepper, author of Sugartown and three other chapbooks.

Zepper will read from Noon - 1 pm at the Marshall-Lyon County Library and from 7-8 pm at SMSU, Charter Hall 201. Zepper teaches at Minnesota State University--Moorhead. Author Lin Enger writes about Zepper's poems: "In a tone both wistful and amazed, he alliterates, puns and raps his way from Pez candies to pot pies, from Icarus to Johnny Cash. Zepper is the bard of the beet fields, the psalmist of potato salad. This guy can write a poem about anything. He can also remind you of things you never realized you knew."

Hope to see you there!

Last spring, Thomas Maltman read from his second novel, Little Wolves, as part of the Southwest Minnesota State University Visiting Writers Series. Here's the video of that terrific reading: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFBtxl9yjHw&feature=youtu.be.

Little Wolves has been nominated for the 26th Annual Minnesota Book Awards in the category of Novel and Short Story. It has also been selected for the All Iowa Reads Program, which you can read more about by clicking this hyperlink.

Little Wolves is a pick for Midwest Connections for December 2013, a top pick from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for favorite mysteries of 2013, and a School Library Journal pick for best adult books for teens in 2013, which called the novel "dark, brooding... and beautifully written."

Tom and I worked on our MFA in Creative Writing together at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and I could not be more thrilled for him. He's one of the most brilliant and hard- working writers I know as well as one of the most dedicated teachers. Our SMSU creative writing students appreciated his visit to their Writers' Workshop and his critique of their writing immensely. We wish you all the best, Tom!

I love to play with words. To capture moments on the page. To explore the physical and spiritual geography of what I call "fly-over country." I write from imagination, observation and my own experience of wandering in fly-over country--the literal, physical spaces of my life on the Minnesota prairie and the inner territory of the soul.

I teach writing at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota. I enjoy cooking and traveling with my husband Jim, reading, practicing yoga, playing tennis, biking, hiking and gardening.
